Google announced the new version of Android during the Google I/O developer conference in 2014. The new version 5.0 is called Lollipop or just “Android L.” Google’s naming convention for Android goes in alphabetical order. The last version started with a “K”(KitKat) and the next version after Lollipop will start with a “M”.
Google introduced a UI design change with Lollipop it calls “Material Design.” Lollipop expands the use of “cards” that users will be familiar with from Google Now. New cards appear almost everywhere. There are cards in a variety of shapes and colors. Cards have new visual effects such has shadows and ripples that give the user a much more interactive experience.
